Promoting a culture of sustainability

Greencoop. Training for Cooperative Sustainability

For Legacoop, sustainability is a cross-cutting theme integrated into all development actions and projects of both the association and its member cooperatives operating across all sectors. For this reason, we have developed the necessary skills to launch sustainable innovation initiatives and promote cooperative development. We have done this through Urban and Territorial Regeneration projects, with a particular focus on the development of inland areas. We have done this by developing Renewable Energy Communities in cooperative form. We have encouraged the transformation of cooperative business strategies and focused attention on the sustainability of energy consumption through the use of renewable or alternative energy. In every case, we have placed a strong emphasis on energy efficiency. To strengthen the internal skills of cooperatives, we have created training programs, such as the GREENCOOP course, which saw an outstanding turnout and participation from cooperatives. This initiative involved leading partners such as Nomisma, LifeGate, and Kon, who are top experts in the subjects covered by the training. Furthermore, the course enabled the dissemination of best practices from both cooperatives and other public and private entities. We established the Innovation and Sustainability Office with the aim of strengthening a wider network of relationships with key players in the culture of sustainability in our country—such as ASviS (Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development), Fondazione Unipolis, and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). This network represents a further opportunity to consolidate the Green Coop initiative.

Why this project

Promoting a culture of sustainability facilitates the necessary changes in individual behavior and production processes, with the aim of limiting the impact of human activities on the environment.

This approach is essential for complying with regulations on emissions control and material recycling. Cultural adjustment and adaptation to the new regulatory environment will be an ongoing requirement.

The objectives of the project

The project was created to strengthen companies’ ability to place environmental protection, the fight against climate change, and the long-term sustainability of production processes at the core of their strategies, while also helping to identify the business potential generated by adopting a culture of sustainability.
